A Real Girl.Navigation: Main page Author: Estvanik, Nicole Section: FRONT & CENTERATLANTA
In Anne Frank: Within and Without, at the Center for Puppetry Arts Jan. 19-29, the Secret Annex where the Frank family hides has all the claustrophobic concreteness of a dollhouse, but writer/director Bobby Box has pushed Anne's story beyond the tiny apartment's walls. A giant, faceless soldier looms nearby, and the Jewish Council moves at the whim of a Nazi-uniformed puppeteer. Puppets also give form to Anne's fantasies: She ice-skates as a Sicilian rod marionette, twirls as a music-box dancer. Another Anne is perfectly round, for a frighteningly prosaic reason: "She must wear all her clothes to the Annex," Box explains, "because to carry a suitcase would arouse suspicion."
