The Kenmore Progressive was a champ at removing ground-in dirt, just like the two pricier models that the GHI engineers tested. This basic model has everything you need to clean.

The Electrolux Oxygen Ultra costs a lot, but for good reason: It's a superb overall cleaner. Plus, this lightweight champ has a washable HEPA filter and an oversize handle that makes carrying easy.

The Red Velvet from Miele sucked up messes as well as the Electrolux did. It has cool extras (like superlow suction for cleaning drapes and a seven-year warranty); it's your call whether they justify the high price.
