NEW ADDITION to the family? Treat that kitten or puppy as you would a baby and petproof your house. Save their skin. Mix a teaspoon of olive oil into your cat's or dog's food every day. It will keep their skin from drying out, and curb shedding. Build a better chew toy. When puppies are teething, they can shred a pair of stilettos in no time. Bobby Dorafshar, a canine behaviorist from Woodland Hills, Calif., suggests soaking a washcloth in chicken broth, then rolling and freezing it. That'll give them something to chew on. Don't give the dog a bone. Cooked bones can splinter and cause internal bleeding in dogs, says Dorafshar. Hide the chocolate. Even a few squares of baking chocolate could be fatal for dogs, says Susan Richmond, co-executive director of the Humane Society of New York. Cut the red tape. Ribbons from gifts are made with an alcohol that's toxic to cats. Pop the hood. Cats like to nestle on a warm engine, says animal activist Franny Syufy. Double-check before you turn the key.
