Bill Creating Health Insurance System Clears Calif. Assembly

Long-dormant legislation to create a state-run health insurance system that would cover all California residents was approved late Tuesday by a committee of the state Assembly, the Associated Press reported. And while the author of the bill conceded it would not reach the desk of GOP Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger this year, Democratic state Sen. Sheila Kuehl said the vote was important тА" because it signaled that health committees in both houses of the California Legislature support the idea of a universal, state-run health insurance system. The bill was approved 12-5 Tuesday night by the Assembly Health Committee more than a year after it passed the Senate. Kuehl said there are several reasons the bill would not make it out this year, including the lack of a final report on its cost. She said she would reintroduce the measure in 2005.
