Senate Races Rhode Island Democratic Secretary of State Matt Brown is nearly out of money in his bid to win the nomination to take on Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, the Associated Press reported. Brown has just $35,000 on hand for the September primary, his campaign said Tuesday as it released details about his fundraising in the first quarter. Brown has about $173,000 of debt, including a loan of more than $91,000 he made to his campaign in the first quarter, his spokesman said. His opponent, former state Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse, has $1.3 million for the primary, the Whitehouse campaign said. Brown's campaign was accused of orchestrating an illegal fundraising scheme in which donors would funnel money to Brown through state Democratic parties in other states as a way to skirt federal limits on donations. Brown has said his campaign did nothing illegal. Chafee and his primary challenger, Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, have not yet released their fundraising numbers for the first quarter. in the Fair Use guidelines of the 1976 U.S. Copyright Act. info [at] singlearticles.com Powered by CommonSense |
