Conn-Selmer, MENC Offer Music Career Jump Start

Music, high-energy pep talks, and late night skull sessions will be the order of the day for participants who check in to Conn-Selmer University next summer. The music education tune-up will be June 4-7, 2006, at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

MENC and CSU are partnering to focus on their mutual goals of recruiting and retaining quality music educators. The aims are to help new teachers become comfortable in their jobs and to retain more experienced music educators.

In the past MENC leaders, including President David Circle and Past President Willie Hill Jr., have participated in the sessions.

"The energy level at the sessions last year was just amazing," said Katie Boruvka, Conn-Selmer University coordinator. "The days start at 7:30 a.m. and go until 10 p.m. During that time, we have participants going nonstop, listening to 'Dr. Tim' [Lautzenheiser], attending exhibits, or dialoguing in small groups with some of the top music educators in the country. It is a incredible experience."

And an affordable one. Registration costs $99 and includes materials, meals, local transportation and on-campus parking. There are three housing options. A limited number of free spaces are available in Notre Dame dormitories, while the cost of an off-campus hotel, will be $150 for the Morris Inn or $100 for other select hotels, in addition to the registration fee.

In 2005 CSU drew a sold-out crowd of music education and music business majors, music educators, and music dealer sales representatives.

For the CSU 2006 session, 300 slots are available. Pre-register to reserve a spot. Visit Conn-Selmer University online at www.connselmeru.com for more details.
