CURTAINS CLOSE ON OAKLAND BALLET.Navigation: Main page Author: Mattingly, Kate Section: NEWS
Oakland Ballet closed its, doors in January after 40 years in California's Bay Area. In 2000, Karen Brown, a former Dance Theatre at Harlem principal, replaced founder Ronn Guidi at the helm. In spite of excellent reviews, the 22-member troupe struggled financially. In December, the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, where OB performs, was closed by the city in an effort to balance its budget. Linda Crayton, acting president of the ballet's board of trustees, said in a statement that, "low ticket sales forced us to use our reserve fund. This, coupled with the elimination of our performance venue, has made it impossible to mount another season of performances." Sets and costumes will be sold.
