THE WIRED CAMPUS

LOOSE LIPS: A group of colleges, libraries, and technology companies has asked a federal court to overturn a ruling, issued by the Federal Communications Commission, that makes Internet "wiretapping" easier. The ruling, delivered in October, requires Internal service providers and colleges to reconfigure their net works so that federal investigators can more easily track individuals' Web browsing and w-mail use. college and library officials have argued that the reconfiguration would prove prohibitively expensive, and that it would inevitably lead to violations of their network users' privacy. And now the American Association of Community Colleges, the Association of American Universities, and the American Library Association have sent a 71-page brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C.

'YES' TO SKYPE: The University of Oxford has lifted a ban on Skype, a popular program that lets users make free telephone calls over the Internet. University officials had feared that students using the software would clog the campus computer network with lenghty long-distance chat sessions.
