The pieces in this exhibition are drawn from the Fogg Art Museum's permanent collection as well as from a variety of other institutions; and many of the featured paintings have not been publicly viewed since the Fogg's 1936 exhibition "American Watercolors From the Museum's Collection." Michener Art Museum by Marguerite and Gerry Lenfest showcases works created by major Pennsylvania impressionist painters, such as Edward W. Redfield, Daniel Garber, John F. Folinsbee, and Fern I. As the museum's curator of collections, Constance Kimmerle, states, "In gifting this collection back to the region in which it was created, the Lenfests have made it possible for museum visitors to engage [Pennsylvania] painters on their native ground and explore the environment that shaped their creations." This exhibition of more than 60 paintings features the collections of brothers Sterling and Stephen Clark, two influential art connoisseurs of the early 20th century. The show will examine the brothers' various collecting styles, as well as explore their relationship, their rivalry, and the influential roles they played in the New York art scene. Among the highlights of the exhibition will be a number of iconic works from the 19th and 20th centuries, including Van Gogh's The Night Carl" and Renoir's At the Concert. Following its premiere at the Clark, the exhibition will be presented at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, in 2007. Showcasing the work of such artists as James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, and Winslow Homer, this exhibition of approximately 100 paintings includes some of America's finest 19th-century masterpieces. The featured works are culled from the collections of the National Gallery, in London, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in association with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, as well as loans from both the United States and Europe. Before arriving at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the show debuted at the National Gallery, in Washington, DC, and will travel to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, where it will be on display from October 17, 2006, through January 28, 2007.
