Furniture Society Fun.Navigation: Main page Author: Jackson, LiLi Section: SHOP TALK
Woodworking Inspirations I had the incredible good fortune of spending my first day of the Furniture Society Conference 2005, held at San Diego State University, on a field trip that touched on some of the greatest influences on American studio furniture making. Sam Maloof's workshop and home were built with the craftsmanship for which Sam is known. The exquisite Blacker House is the largest and most elaborate of the "Ultimate Bungalows" designed by the late Charles and Henry Greene. Great influences at the conference itself were keynote speaker Dave Hickey and his views on design and beauty, and Award of Distinction recipient Judy McKie, whose pioneering concepts in surface decoration were reflected in work shown in the members' gallery and slides. Surface decorations, mixed media and green woodworking were also among the topics of lectures and demonstrations â€" including an iron pour where very brave and talented people made and poured molten iron into casts to use in furniture designs. The conference was a success in no small part due to the wonderful people in attendance. Furniture makers really know how to have a good time.
