Genetics study scores donation from Bengals head coach.Navigation: Main page Author: Unknown Section: national mssociety
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis announced last May that the Marvin Lewis Community Fund, which he founded with his wife, Peggy, in 2003, would be giving a grant of $401,194 to the National MS Society. The Angelo Papastamos Research Grant, named for Peggy Lewis's brother, who has MS, is earmarked for research into the genetic mapping of MS. Linda Stetson, president of the Ohio Valley Chapter, told InsideMS that Lewis's gift has ramifications beyond the money itself. "We hope his gift will raise awareness about the disease in anyone who follows the NFL," Stetson said. The project's lead investigator, Jorge R. Oksenberg, PhD, at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine, aims to pinpoint genes that may be involved in determining MS susceptibility, progression, and type of MS an individual develops.
