GOINGS ON ABOUT TOWN

THIS WEEK THE THEATRE

BUSY LADY

The actress Jill Clayburgh--who appeared last fall in "A Naked Girl on the Appian Way" and just finished a run in "Barefoot in the Park" on Broadway--now stars in "The Busy World Is Hushed," a drama by Keith Bunin about a minister and Bible scholar (Clayburgh) and her obdurate son.

NIGHT LIFE

FAMILY VALUES

James Luther Dickinson-also known as the veteran Memphis-based producer Jim Dickinson--makes a rare visit to town. He's at Joe's Pub, backed by Chris Chew, on bass, and his sons, Cody, on drums, and Luther, on guitar. Expect two nights of Southern-fried party music, with the occasional protest song thrown in for good measure.

ART

BUILDING UP

The visionary architect Zaha Hadid, who was born in Baghdad and is now based in London, has designed everything from ski jumps to art museums, including Cincinnati's new Contemporary Arts Center. She is also the subject of a survey at the Guggenheim. Photographs, models, and sketches of her architectural projects share the space with paintings, which free her from the usual constraints of materials, practicality, and gravity.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

FINISHING UP

The New York Philharmonic's season closes this week with a program in which Lorin Maazel conducts works by Elliott Carter and Stravinsky (featuring the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard) and Berlioz.

MOVIES

SUMMER ICE

Whether he was filming a racetrack heist ("The Killing") or the Vietnam War ("Full Metal Jacket"), the Bronx-born Stanley Kubrick epitomized directorial megalomania and lent a glacial chill to all of his subjects. A nearly complete retrospective of Kubrick's films opens this week at Moving Image with the coldest work of all, "2001: A Space Odyssey," in a restored 70-mm print.
