For most Apple fans, the iPod digital music player and the iTunes music download website are the perfect combo. But for people who care more about music mix than computer loyalties, it's no knockout: iPods won't play tunes downloaded from other sites, even if legally purchased. Now that's no longer the case. Looking to take a bite out of Apple, RealNetworks has released software that lets users effectively hack the iPod, much to the dismay of Apple, which is mulling legal options. The Harmony technology, at real.com/harmony as part of the latest RealPlayer program, lets you save music from non-iTunes sites in the iPod's Fairplay format. True, it's one more app to juggle. But by cutting down on format frustration, Harmony is pretty sweet.
