Steve Bigari, owner/operator of nine McDonald's restaurants in Colorado Springs, Colo., is serving up a Big Mac of benefits. In January, Bigari rolled out a comprehensive "McFamily Benefits" program, designed to promote self-sufficiency by meeting the fundamental needs of his more than 300 employees. Bigari left no resource untapped, creating a network of public, private and nonprofit corporations as well as tapping the state and federal governments to address issues such as housing, transportation, medical care, child care and more. According to Bigari, employee response to date has been "phenomenal," with marked improvement in morale and retention. "The key to this is that every person or agency who is collaborating has a vested self interest in helping these individuals become totally self-sufficient," Bigari says. McDonald's Corp. spokesperson Bill Whitman says the Oak Brook, Ill.-based company will keep an eye on Bigari's effort and note what works, as it does with similar but smaller-scale undertakings by other McDonald's operators across the country.
