PARTS

* Western Digital 300-gigabyte, 3.5-inch internal hard drive: $70; Best Buy

* CP Technologies aluminum USB 2.0 enclosure: $15; newegg.com

BUYING TIPS

* Hit dealnews.com for the latest bargains.

* Make sure your drive and your case use the same type of connector: IDE or SATA.

* RPMs matter more than cache size.

1 PLUG IT IN. There are just two cables on the case: data (the long ribbon) and power. Each fits only one way into its socket, Press both tightly to fully seat them.

2 SCREW IT DOWN. Using the screws that come with the case, attach the drive to the bracket. Again, there's only one way to do it, but try to keep the drive centered.
