Look Out, Microsoft Since last month's announcement that Google, Inc. and Sun Microsystems, Inc. will be offering online word processing and spreadsheet functions expected to rival Microsoft Corp.'s Office products, Outsell, Inc. took a look at the impact of the partnership on the industry. Although the announcement was "tepid," the partnership was "much more substantive," according to Marc Strohlein, Outsell's vice president and lead analyst. He sees it as basically a win-win situation for both players. Sun Microsystems can now monetize Java technology through Google's help, and Google can benefit from Sun's expertise in open source and Java technology. Go DigitalThanks to the iPod revolution, the music industry is changing … and quickly. According to a recent report from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, digital music sales climbed to $790 million (6 percent of industry sales) for the first half of 2005. The U.S. market saw a decline in physical sales of 5.3 percent, but digital sales nearly tripled for the same period. Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes online music store accounts for 82 percent of legal downloads in the U.S. Philadelphia: The Wireless City That Loves You BackPhiladelphia is in the midst of a grand techno-savvy plan to create the country's biggest municipal wireless Internet system. The Atlanta-based EarthLink, Inc. is in charge of the 135-square-mile network, which is now being billed as a necessary and essential social service. EarthLink estimates that service (1 megabit per second for uploading and downloading) will be offered for about $20 per month to Philadelphia customers; discounts will be available for low-income residents. The network is expected to be in place by late 2006. PHOTO (COLOR) PHOTO (COLOR) in the Fair Use guidelines of the 1976 U.S. Copyright Act. info [at] singlearticles.com Powered by CommonSense |
