Renesas Revs Chinese Auto Industry

Microcontroller behemoth Renesas Technology Corp., a joint venture between Hitachi Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. formed in 2003, today announced its plans to provide microcomputers and technical support for automotive systems developed by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC).

Renesas has driven its semiconductors into the auto industry for more than 20 years, mainly in the United States, Europe and Japan. It provides microcomputer-based system solutions for car audio, dashboard, body control and car navigation systems.

Steering its attention toward the Chinese automobile market, which is poised for enormous growth, Renesas said it has begun consolidating its sales and technical support bases, establishing quality-control centers and undertaking design for the Chinese automobile market.

CATARC was established in 1985. It is a scientific research institute, which was funded by the state and is now affiliated with the China State-owned Estate Supervision and Administration Committee of the State Council. CATARC administrates automotive technical regulations with the state, develops automotive systems and provides technical support in response to Chinese market demands.

Through its collaboration with CATARC, Renesas hopes to boost the brand recognition of its microcomputers in the Chinese auto market while it drives technology to meet those demands.
