RSS REVISITED.Navigation: Main page Author: Miller, Ron Section: letters TO THE EDITOR
RSS technology is still very immature, but I think when you get into money models (such as NewsKnowledge), then it becomes necessary to have a server-based subscription service, not just a hop on/hop off-news aggregator software (client-centered) model. Since subscribing/ unsubscribing is a function of the news aggregator at this point, the software has to handle it on the local level, but as I said, if you want to provide a mechanism to make money with content syndication, then you need to have a more formal subscription model, and I suspect we will see this more as we move forward. I feel we rather strongly commented that distribution via RSS virtually eliminates spam. We have a whole section on it on page 23. You don't get much stronger than Chris Pirillo's "Email is dead" quote. I also think we make that clear that RSS feeds are not exclusive to news aggregators. I the section, Fighting Empty Portal Syndrome, we give an example of a media company that uses NewsKnowledge. They are news aggregators using a news aggregator, just as you suggest. Thank you for your comments. ~~~~~~~~ By Ron Miller in the Fair Use guidelines of the 1976 U.S. Copyright Act. info [at] singlearticles.com Powered by CommonSense |
