New Jersey resident Jay Vaughan Gregory Jr., 48, accused of robbing banks in Utah and Montana, might have eluded police had he not updated his profile on a gay chat room:
- Banks in Salt Lake City and Missoula, Mont., are held up May 6 by a robber using a fake bomb, which officers later determine included a circuit board from a television remote control.
- A search of Missoula motels finds one with a damaged TV remote, where staff members identify Gregory as someone who had several guests.
- One of those guests tells police he had met "Jeremiah" through a gay Web site, where Gregory had posted a profile giving his location. Detectives check the site May 11 and find Gregory has updated his location to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
- A Kootenai County sheriffs deputy spots Gregory's car in a Coeur d'Alene hotel parking lot, where officers arrest him
