Sun Microsystems and Google have struck an agreement to collaborate around Java. In the first step of the partnership, Sun will include the Google Toolbar with its Java Runtime Environment, move likely to increase use of the Toolbar. The agreement also extends to further work on projects such as the OpenOffice.org open-source productivity software suite. That would pit Sun and Google together against Microsoft's Office suite, which dominates the office-software market among desktops, and could lead to new breeds of search-centric software applications.
