The Sound of Money.Navigation: Main page Author: Goodin, Emily Section: Hotline Extra
When wealthy contributors write checks to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, they get a secret telephone number that gives them access to his closest advisers, and even to the Republican governor himself. Twice a month, donors can participate in conference calls featuring information about Schwarzenegger's campaign strategy. Moreover, the donors can also give the governor advice. The calls offer a rare glimpse of Schwarzenegger's "donor-maintenance" effort: insider information, solicitous compliments, and invitations to exclusive parties. The governor participated in a call with donors two weeks ago and is expected to do so again on June 16. For each conference call, contributors to Schwarzenegger's causes receive an e-mail that tells them how to get a phone number and a password. The campaign staff decides which significant donors will be included in each conversation. The discussions typically feature a "special guest," such as a campaign strategist, talking about Schwarzenegger's plans, as well as information about fundraising events and a question-and-answer session.
