Top money for maturity

NON-PEDIGREE STATUS failed to deter buyers' enthusiasm at the dispersal of the Holstein herd of North Yorks milk producers Messrs N J Sellers at Shipton-by-Beningborough, where prices reached 1020gns.

Established for 50 years, the herd brought onto the market a wealth of sound, productive dairy cattle that had achieved a herd average of 9100kg from a "no frills" straw-yard system.

Among the sires used in the development of the herd were Etazon Addison, Genus Larson, Slocum and Ked Juror.

Although young stock continue to generate a keen trade at all sales it was maturity that nudged the bidding over four figures here when the top call came for a fourth calver by Iv-Ann Mark Tesk. She realised 1020gns and had given over 50kg on the day. Buyers were N and J Hellowell of Kirkbyside.

And it was another fourth calver by Tesk that made one of the two 1000gns bids; she heads for the Winton herd of Peter Waring at Beverley. Sharing the 1000gns price tag was an in-calf heifer by Silverpost Sinatra due in November. Buyer was Hector Buckley of Huddersfield.

Calves met a fierce trade with 25 head averaging £378. Topping this section was 460gns given by Nick Dalby, Harrogate, for a Sinatra daughter.

Hauling home the biggest load were G H & B Laverick and Sons who took 10 cows for their Wintrick herd at Northallerton.

Averages: 87 cows and calved heifers £750, 10 served heifers £847 and nine maiden heifers £504. (Norton & Brooksbank)
