Debates Tuesday 16 May Westminster Hall Debate HC 2006/0194 Adult learning. Helen Jones (Lab, Warrington North) introduced a debate in Westminster Hall on further education and adult learning. Tuesday 16 May Westminster Hall Debate HC 2006/0195 Adult education. Louise Ellman (Lab, Liverpool Riverside) introduced a debate in Westminster Hall on the proposed closure of part of the Liverpool Community College, which had provided basic courses for adults for 30 years. Laura Moffatt (Lab, Crawley) will introduce a debate on nursing training and practice. Committees ###Wednesday 17 May. The Education and Skills Select Committee took evidence on the dispute between universities and academics from Dr Geoffrey Copland, Vice Chancellor of University of Westminster and chairman of Universities and Colleges Employers' Association (UCEA); Professor Les Ebdon, Vice Chancellor of University of Luton and Member of UCEA board; Jocelyn Prudence, Chief executive, UCEA; and Peter Thorpe, UCEA; Sally Hunt, General Secretary, AUT; Steve Wharton, President, AUT; Roger Kline, Head of Universities Department, NATFHE; and Andy Pike, Universities Department, NATFHE. ###Wednesday 17 May. A select committee on human rights warned the Government that its plans in the Education and Inspections Bill to give more powers to discipline teachers could breach human rights legislation. ###Monday 22 May.The Education and Skills Select Committee will take evidence for its inquiry into citizenship education from Simon Goulden, Executive Director, United Synagogue Agency for Jewish Education; Nick McKemey, Head of School Improvement, Church of England; Dr Mohammed Mukadam, chairman, Association of Muslim Schools UK (also, Head, Leicester Islamic Academy); and Oona Stannard, Chief Executive and Director, Catholic Education Service. EDMs There were four early day motions covering education, children's services and training tabled in the House of Commons last week. One concerned the dispute between the universities and their academics. Another was concerned about the continuing gap in educational achievement between black and white students, particularly in disadvantaged areas. Written Ministerial Statements There were ministerial statements from DfES Ministers on various EU meetings to do with education and youth. There was also a statement on the teachers' pension scheme. There was a statement from Harriet Harman, Minister of State at the Department for Constitutional Affairs, on the child care proceedings review. Future Activity Tuesday 23/Wednesday 24 May. Debates Wednesday 17 May Unstarred Question HL 2006/0196 Lord Wallace of Saltaire (LDP, Life) asked Her Majesty's Government: "What consultations they will undertake on the teaching of British values in English schools?" The Archbishop of Canterbury introduce a debate on the role of the churches in the civic life of towns and cities, the churches' partnership with other bodies and the part they play in addressing the problems of deprivation. Debates Thursday 18 May Oral Questions, General SP 2006/0197 EU; substance abuse. Two education questions were asked during the general questions session. One concerned young people who had taken part in a forum on the EU. The other concerned children in families where parents are substance abusers. Thursday 18 May Oral Questions, First Minister SP 2006/0198 Nurseries; pregnancies. Two education questions were asked during First Minister's questions. One concerned hygiene standards in child care nurseries. The other concerned parental education and underage pregnancies. Committees The Education Committee met on Wednesday 17 May. The Committee took evidence at Stage 1 of the Adoption and Children (Scotland) Bill. The Committee also considered an update from the Scottish Executive on the child protection reform programme. The Education Committee will next meet on Wednesday 24 May. It will take evidence on the Adoption and Children (Scotland) Bill.

Debates Tuesday 16 May Oral Questions, First Minister WA 2006/0199 During questions to the First Minister there were three questions on education, covering Welsh lessons for adult learners, surplus places in schools and primary education in Cardiff. Tuesday 16 May Delegated Legislation WA 2006/0200 There was a brief debate on delegated legislation covering the science curriculum and the functions of the GTC Wales. Wednesday 17 May Oral Questions, Health WA 2006/0201 During questions on health and social services there was a question bilingual teaching in the university college Bangor school of nursing. Wednesday 17 May Oral Questions, Sport WA 2006/0202 During questions on culture, the Welsh language and sport there was a question on the Dragon Sport Initiative. Wednesday 17 May Debate WA 2006/0203 Children. Jane Davidson, Education Minister, introduced a debate on safeguarding children. Wednesday 17 May Debate WA 2006/0204 Estyn. Jane Davidson, Education Minister, introduced a debate on HM Chief inspector's annual report on Estyn. Committees The Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills Committee met on Thursday 18 May. Its agenda included scrutiny of the Assembly Learning Grant and Loans (Higher Education) (Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2006. It received a presentation on the youth service from the WAG. The Committee also considered its operational plan for 2006-07. The Education Lifelong Learning and Skills Committee will meet on 7 June, 22 June, 5 July, 20 September, 5 October, 18 October, 9 November, 22 November and 7 December 2006. The Committee on School Funding met in private on Wednesday 17 May. The Committee on School Funding will next meet on 8 June. Future Activity
