WINTER-PROOF YOUR CAR

TESTING FROM THE GOOD HOUSEKEEPING INSTITUTE From GHI--easy ways to avoid snow and ice catastrophes

De-ice windshields

New windshield-wiper fluids contain an additive that helps melt ice so you won't have to scrape in the bitter cold. Mr. Clean Windshield Wash and De-icer ($2.99 for one gallon) melted ice faster and more completely than other brands we tested. For even better results, give your windshield a good coating of Prestone's Ice & Frost Shield ($4.99 for 32 ounces), which prevents a heavy buildup of ice and snow. In our evaluation, treated surfaces needed just one swipe to come clean.

For windows that don't have wipers, use the ten-inch Hoppy Ice Chisel Scraper ($2.49). The insulated handle is comfortable and makes it a cinch to apply force.

Use the right antifreeze mix

Your engine needs to be cooled, even in the winter. So it requires water, which on frigid days can turn to ice and leave you stranded on the side of the road. That's where antifreeze comes in. The recommended balance for optimal functioning: a fifty-fifty combination of water and antifreeze, even in temperatures as low as 34 degrees below zero. If you'd rather not do the blending yourself, try a premixed formula such as Prestone's 50/50 Prediluted Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (about $7 for one gallon).

Check the tires

Worn-down tires increase the risk of winter skids and hydroplaning. Tire treads should have a minimum of 5/32 of an inch depth in the grooves. To check, put an upside-down penny in several treads. The rubber should cover Lincoln's hairline. If the tread doesn't get that far, the tire may not perform well when you're driving in snowy conditions.

Fix frozen locks fast

If you have a car with a traditional lock, ice blockage can be a problem. Stash a can of aerosol Victor Lock De-Icer & Lubricant ($1.99 for two cans) in your home or office--of the brands we tested, Victor performed best.

Prepare for emergencies

You could get stuck, so carry a flashlight, jumper cables, a shovel, and sand or kitty litter for traction.
